Refrigerator Leaking Water

Water pooling under or inside your refrigerator can cause damage and indicates a problem that needs attention.

Common Symptoms

You may be experiencing one or more of these issues:

  • Water pooling under refrigerator
  • Water inside refrigerator compartment
  • Ice or frost buildup inside
  • Water in crisper drawers
  • Water dripping from dispenser
  • Moisture around door seals

Possible Causes

Clogged Defrost Drain

common

The drain that channels defrost water to the evaporator pan is blocked.

How to check: Look for ice or debris in the drain hole at the back of the freezer floor.

Cracked or Overflowing Drain Pan

moderate

The pan that collects defrost water is cracked or overflowing.

How to check: Slide out the drain pan and inspect for cracks. Check if it's full.

Water Filter Problems

moderate

Improper filter installation or a cracked filter housing can cause leaks.

How to check: Inspect water filter area for moisture. Ensure filter is properly seated.

Water Line Connection Issues

moderate

The water supply line to the ice maker or dispenser may be loose or damaged.

How to check: Check water line connections behind the refrigerator for moisture.

Ice Maker Overflow

moderate

Malfunctioning ice maker water inlet valve can cause overfilling.

How to check: Check ice maker area for ice buildup or signs of water overflow.

Door Seal Condensation

moderate

Humid Arizona monsoon air meeting cold surfaces can cause condensation.

How to check: If moisture appears mainly during monsoon season and seals look intact, humidity may be the cause.

DIY Troubleshooting Steps

Always unplug electrical appliances or turn off gas before troubleshooting. Safety first!
  1. 1

    Locate the Leak Source

Determine if water is coming from inside (crisper area, ice maker) or underneath. This helps identify the cause.

  2. 2

    Clear the Defrost Drain

Remove freezer contents. Find drain hole at back of freezer floor. Use warm water and a turkey baster to flush the drain.

Don't use sharp objects that might damage the drain.
  3. 3

    Check the Drain Pan

Carefully slide out the drain pan from under the refrigerator. Empty if full. Inspect for cracks.

  4. 4

    Inspect Water Filter

Remove and reseat the water filter, ensuring it's properly locked in place. Check housing for cracks.

  5. 5

    Check Water Line Connections

Pull refrigerator away from wall and inspect water supply line connection. Tighten if loose.

Turn off water supply before checking connections.
  6. 6

    Level the Refrigerator

If the refrigerator isn't level, water may not drain properly. Adjust leveling legs as needed.
