Handling Power Outages

Monsoon storms regularly knock out power in Phoenix. Knowing how to handle outages protects both your food and your appliances.

During the Outage

Keep Doors Closed

The most important rule: - Full freezer: safe 48 hours - Half-full freezer: safe 24 hours - Refrigerator: safe 4 hours - Every door opening reduces time

Don't Open "Just to Check" - Each opening lets cold air escape - Temperature rises significantly - Recovery takes longer - Resist the temptation

Food Safety Guidelines

When to Keep:

Freezer foods are safe if:* - Still have ice crystals - Temperature below 40°F - Texture hasn't changed

Refrigerator foods keep if:* - Temperature stayed below 40°F - Under 4 hours at room temperature - No unusual smell or texture

When to Discard:

Always discard:* - Raw or cooked meat above 40°F for 2+ hours - Fish and seafood above 40°F for 2+ hours - Dairy products above 40°F for 2+ hours - Eggs (including dishes containing eggs) - Cut fruits and vegetables above 40°F for 2+ hours

Usually safe:* - Hard cheeses - Butter, margarine - Fresh whole fruits and vegetables - Condiments (mustard, ketchup, etc.) - Bread and bakery items

When Power Returns

Don't Rush: 1. Wait for stable power (not just a flicker) 2. Listen for appliances to start 3. Give 15-30 minutes before checking temperatures

Check Temperatures: - Refrigerator should be below 40°F - Freezer should be below 0°F - Use thermometer if uncertain

Assess Food: - Check temperatures of specific items - Look for ice crystals in frozen food - Smell test where appropriate - When in doubt, throw it out

Power Surge Protection

Risks During Outages: - Surge when power returns - Can damage control boards - Affects sensitive electronics - Costly repairs result

Protection Options:

Surge protectors:* - Point-of-use protectors - Whole-house surge protection - Uninterruptible power supply (UPS)

Best Practice:* Unplug sensitive appliances during storms if possible, or use whole-house surge protection.

Extended Outages (24+ Hours)

Consider: - Moving food to coolers with ice - Asking neighbors if they have power - Locating emergency ice source - Documenting for insurance if needed

Dry Ice Option: - 50 lbs keeps 18 cu ft freezer frozen 24 hours - Don't touch directly - Ensure ventilation - Place on top (cold sinks)

After Extended Outages

Appliance Check: - Listen for normal operation - Check temperatures after 2-4 hours - Watch for error codes - Note any unusual sounds

Professional Assessment: If unit doesn't restart properly or makes unusual sounds, call for service. Power events can damage components.

Arizona Monsoon Preparation

Before Monsoon Season: - Consider surge protection installation - Know refrigerator temperature settings - Have coolers and ice sources identified - Keep freezer full (water bottles if needed)

During Storm Season: - Monitor weather alerts - Know likely outage duration in your area - Have emergency contact numbers - Document appliance status

Insurance Considerations

Document Everything: - Take photos of food before discarding - Keep receipts for disposed food - Note appliance damage - Contact homeowner's insurance if significant

Coverage: Many policies cover food loss from power outages. Check your policy and document appropriately.
